Almost all of us are familiar with the phrase ‘pen is mightier than the sword’. It says that a pen has got more power than a sword. A pen can do something more than that a sword can do. The pen has the revolutionary power by dints of which it will sweep the whole world clean of the dirt and squalor but day by day electronic mediums are replacing the mighty pen. The use of computers, mobiles, telephones etc. has almost rooted out the function of a pen. Much of the works in different offices are now done on computers. And email, chat and sms have almost obscured the art of writing letters; be it official or love letters.
Few decades ago, when people were not so computer savvy, used to express the feelings and thoughts of their hearts through pen and paper. Then lovers used to perform the magic of their words in paper using a pen, dipped into the ink of their love. Now they prefer chatting, sending sms or emails instead of writing letters.
But still there are avenues that are yet to be conquered by the electronic machine. It is unable to kill the pen completely. The Computer has not been succeeded to sever our bonds with the pen. It is a relationship that we strike at the very beginning of our life. A pen is an object of possession that one may pass on to his children with grandeur. It is something with which you sign with flourish. The pen still remains an object to hold onto.
Students’ life is totally impossible without a pen. Moreover, many schools allow writing in pen in junior classes, for it is the best way for good handwriting. Though they use a lot of computer, but during some creative writings, using pen and paper is the best way. Direct skin contact with a pen helps to the flow of one’s creative juice. Many writers swear by pen. Writing prose is easy on computers but while composing poetry, pen and paper, are a must thing for almost all authors. As a pen is less mechanical, it helps a writer to invoke his muse properly. Pen also brings variety. It has been seen that writers worldwide have an affinity for pen.
Writing on paper with beautiful ink can change you and the way you think. There is a physical pleasure in holding a pen and seeing your words to take shape. It also relives you from those neck pains you get from working long hours at a keyboard. It makes you think of the form words and ideas. It also makes you to see, how they look and how they sound. Moreover, without a pen, one cannot doodle. A personal computer or laptop does not give you that facility. A pen has been an accessory and a status symbol for long time. Very few men venture out to work without a pen, even though through the day it might be used just for signature. A man loves to have a good looking and expensive pen in his pocket. There are many such persons for whom collecting different models of pens has been a passion. They take pride in possessing them. Losing once favorite pen is heart-breaking affair. A pen is such an object that one can call his own. If we think minutely you will find that many of our childhood memories are attached with a pen. Just try to go back to your school days memory when you did not feel happy in lending your favorite pen to anybody else.
So, pen is a pen and it will remain to be so. No invention can shake our love and utility of it. Science and technologies gifted us several writing devices which write faster but the pen is not dead yet. With a long history behind it and the fondness of man still backing it, it will survive a hundreds decade more; at least that we can hope.
